Cajeta, our version of dulce de leche, gives this all-time classic dessert a sweet twist while adding cream cheese gives the dish a silky touch.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 2 cups evaporated milk
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup cream cheese
  • sea salt pinch to top
  • 2 1/2 cups cajeta (Mexican dulce de leche)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Stir 2 cups melted cajeta or dulce de leche (10 to 30 seconds in the microwave to melt) in the flanera (flan mold) and be sure to cover every part of it. Reserve the remaining cajeta.
  3. Mix milk in a blender with brown sugar, eggs, cream cheese and vanilla extract.
  4. Pour mix into the flanera and place inside a larger tray, filled halfway with hot water, simulating a "baño maria" (water bath) so it has enough moisture while it bakes.
  5. Bake trays for about 50 minutes.
  6. Once ready remove from tray and let stand 30 minutes. Chill until cold, at least 4 hours and up to 1 day. Turn over and top the remaining cajeta and salt.
  7. Enjoy!
