Tis the season to be jolly! And what better way to celebrate the holiday season than with a warm, comforting mug of mulled wine ponche. Ponche is a traditional warm cider-like punch that is especially popular during the holidays. Spiked with a delicious combination of red wine, brandy, and orange liqueur, this ponche de vino tinto is a delicious twist on the classic fruit-filled ponche served during las posadas. Slices of tart Granny Smith apples, sweet oranges, and the intoxicating aroma of fresh guavas add flavor and depth to this beverage.
Ingredients
- 8 cups apple juice
- 4 cups red wine
- 2 cups orange juice
- 2 cups water
- 1 cup whiskey
- ½ cup orange liqueur
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 3 whole star anise
- 2 granny smith apples cored and thinly sliced
- 2 oranges cut in eighths
- 8 guavas cut in quarters
- cinnamon sticks for garnish
Directions
- Combine apple juice, red wine, orange juice, water, whiskey, orange liqueur, and granulated sugar in a 6-quart stock pot. Stir gently until sugar has dissolved completely.
- Add the cinnamon sticks, star anise, apples, oranges, and guavas. Bring to a boil over high heat.
- Cover and reduce heat to low. Let simmer for 30 to 45 minutes. Remove from heat.
- Ladle into mugs and garnish with a cinnamon stick. Enjoy!
Chef Notes
Combine all the ingredients in your slow cooker. Simmer on low heat for at least 4 hours before serving.
