I love love love breakfast smoothies! For me there’s no better way to start the day. Other than being a great way to get your daily serving of fruits and veggies, smoothies help you load up on protein and fiber.

We don’t always want or crave a heavy, cooked meal in the morning, but we also know breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So it’s no surprise that breakfast smoothies have become all the rage, but the store-bought varieties can get expensive. Save your money and enjoy a morning full of fresh flavor and energy with these three superfood smoothies!

Tropical Breakfast Smoothie

Exotic fruits like papaya and mango aren’t just there for the taste. Papayas are rich in vitamin C, B vitamins, folate and flavonoids. They’re also a good source of potassium, copper, magnesium and fiber. Mangos are also high in vitamin C as well as vitamin A. I added banana, avocado (a superfood that's a great source of protein and “good” fat), and strawberries to complete a rich and tasty smoothie. Finally, I added some Greek yogurt, which is high in probiotics that help your digestive system, and helps you feel fuller for longer.

Detox Smoothie Verde

Green detox smoothies are among the most popular smoothies around, with good reason. Apart from containing a perfect balance of fruits and vegetables, they’re a fantastic way to cleanse your body after partying hard or returning from a calories-be-darned holiday! Finally, this smoothie packs an extra punch with the addition of chia seeds, a superfood that’s been called one of the world’s most nutritious foods. Rich in calcium, magnesium and iron, high in fiber and heart-healthy omega-3 fats (a “good” fat), and a great source of B-vitamins, chia seeds offer many health benefits to help you detox.

 Piña Colada Smoothie

This smoothie is more than just a taste of the tropics! It also has wonderful health benefits. Let’s start with the pineapple, which is naturally high in fiber and can help improve digestion. You also get plenty of vitamins and minerals, including calcium and vitamins A and C, as well as folic acid. Coconut is an excellent antioxidant and also helps keep you hydrated.  Finally, chia seeds make another appearance in this one, because they give you an easy way to get your daily intake of many nutrients.

Chef Notes

When it comes to making your own smoothie recipes, avoid adding sugar if you can. The natural sweetness of the fruits should be enough, especially if you want to keep your breakfast as nutritious and healthy as possible.
