Learn How To Tell the Difference Between Celery, Parsley, and Cilantro With These Tips

When we start to plan a recipe, the first thing we think of is the ingredients we will be using. The spices and herbs we use determine your dish’s taste and flavor, so you must choose wisely. However, when you go to the grocery store, you may feel stumped in the produce aisle as many herbs look the same. Many of us just see a bunch of greenery and may end up picking the wrong one, such as in the case of celery, parsley, and cilantro.

While it can initially seem difficult, there are some key characteristics you can search for that will help you tell the difference between celery, parsley, and cilantro, so you will never accidentally use the wrong herb and completely alter the intended flavor of your dish.

Look at the Shape and Size

Although at first glance, parsley and cilantro look exactly the same, they actually have different shapes. For example, cilantro’s leaves have a round shape, while parsley’s leaves are more flat and pointed and have a darker green color.

While parsley and cilantro are the herbs that are most easy to confuse, celery has a more distinct appearance if you truly stop to compare them. When shopping for celery leaves, look for oblong leaves. Celery is also the longest of the three herbs, so it should be the easiest to identify.

Flavor:

It is important to learn how to tell the difference between celery, parsley, and cilantro because they all have entirely different tastes.

Cilantro has an utterly distinct flavor, with a citric taste that is hard to miss. Celery leaves have a milder flavor, making them perfect for pairing with other foods.

On the other hand, parsley has more of a “grassy, peppery taste.”

You may be wondering what you can use celery for, as the hard stalk is what is mainly used to snack on. However, there are plenty of uses for celery leaves, and they can add a flavor that is out of this world to your favorite recipes.
