Latin Foods That Have Become Summer Foods Worldwide

Did you know that today marks the official start of the summer? Many of us have already started to feel the effects of the hot weather and have already been doing some of our favorite summertime activities.

All these activities leave us yearning for some of our favorite summertime foods that simply pair well with this bright, sunny weather.

Latin America is an area that offers a wide range of diversity in terms of cuisine. Each region has traditional dishes and foods that have become well known and loved worldwide.

Here are some Latin foods that have become a summertime must-have worldwide.

Empanadas are a very traditional food throughout Latin America. What is most shocking is that each country has its own recipes for making them, such as Colombia, Venezuela, and Argentina.

Needless to say, everyone worldwide has adopted a wide variety of empanada recipes throughout the summer.

The best part is that you can even make them yourself. Here is a recipe incorporating chorizo that your family is sure to love.

Empanadas de Chorizo (Chorizo Empanadas)

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 large onions chopped
  • 4 stalks scallion chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper chopped
  • 5 chorizo sausages argentinean-style, chopped
  • Ground black pepper to taste
  • Parsley finely chopped, to taste
  • 12 puff pastry-style empanada discs (from your grocer’s freezer)
  • 1 egg beaten, for the egg wash

  1. Heat the oil in a skillet and sauté the onion, scallion, and bell pepper until tender.
  2. Add the chorizo, cook fully, and season with black pepper. Remove from the heat, and add the parsley once the mixture is cool.
  3. Fill the empanada discs with a heaping tablespoon of filling and firmly seal them shut by crimping the edge with a fork.
  4. Place the empanadas on a greased baking sheet, and brush the tops with beaten egg.
  5. Bake for 20 minutes in a preheated oven at 375ºF.

Tacos are known to have originated in Mexico. In Mexico, tacos are made using a soft tortilla, cilantro, and white onion with protein such as chicken or carne asada. Tacos have become so well-loved in the world that every region has adopted its own way of making them.

Take, for instance, Tex-Mex tacos that can be easily found in the United States. These typically are made with hard shells, lettuce, and plenty of cheese. While not entirely authentic, they have become a staple for summer cookouts.

Ceviche is a traditional dish that originated in Peru. It is made from chunks of raw fish cured and marinated with citric juices such as lemon. It also typically contains red onion, salt, and red peppers.

Ceviche is a side dish commonly accompanied by rice, tortilla chips, or even beans.

Ceviche has become a beloved dish worldwide, and its tangy, citric flavor makes it a popular choice during the summertime.
