Coriander: Your Tummy’s Ally

Used by the ancient Chinese to cure digestive complaints and by Ayurveda to treat many conditions, coriander can significantly help to control the symptoms of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and any other aliment having to do with your stomach. Phew!

The most important thing you need to know about Coriander is that several studies demonstrate that it is effective in the treatment of the symptoms of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), which means it helps with:

  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal pain
  • Distention
  • Diminishing the formation of ulcers in the stomach

But what is exactly is Coriander? It’s the round seed of a plant from the same botanical family as parsley. There are two varieties that differ in flavor, color and size:

  • European: with more flavor, a rugged surface and cream-colored.
  • Indian: smaller in size, pale yellow color and a more subtle flavor.

Both varieties are available in markets either whole or ground. Since they lose their essential oils rapidly, try to always buy coriander whole and in small quantities. The seeds contain more than 20 different types of essential oils, two of which are potent antioxidants considered responsible of the healing power of coriander.

Other possible uses of coriander include treatment for anxiety control, insomnia and poisoning intoxication. In other words, it’s a wonderful idea to keep it handy!
