Trio of Agua Frescas (Fruit Waters)

  • For Cucumber Lime
  • 4 medium cucumbers peeled, seeded and chopped
  • 1 medium English cucumber seeded, but leave skin on
  • 5 limes
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 4 cups cold water
  • For Pineapple
  • 1 large fresh pineapple peeled, cored and chopped
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 5 cups cold water
  • For Watermelon
  • 6 cups seedless watermelon chopped
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 5 cups cold water
  • Fresh mint for garnish, optional

When I lived at home, I remember visiting the mercado in Monterrey, Mexico. The puestos (market stalls) that always got my attention were the ones that sold agua frescas. The oversized glass jars all lined up filled with fresh agua fresca. There were so many delicious flavors to choose from. My favorite flavors were pineapple, watermelon and cucumber-lime. Agua frescas are so easy to prepare at home. Your favorite fruit, cold water, sugar and lime is all that is required to serve up a tasty and fresh fruit drink that you can feel good about serving to your family.

Directions

For Cucumber Lime
  1. Transfer the chopped cucumber to the blender. Chop one half of the English cucumber and add it to the blender. Add the juice of 5 limes, sugar and cold water. Blend on high until smooth. Strain into a pitcher. Finely chop the remaining cucumber and add to agua fresca. Yields 7 servings of 8-oz. glasses.
For Pineapple
  1. Add all of the ingredients to the blender, reserving some pineapple for garnish. Blend on high until smooth. Strain and serve over ice. Garnish with fresh pineapple. Yields 7 servings of 8-oz. glasses.
For Watermelon
  1. Add all of the ingredients to the blender, reserving 1 cup of diced watermelon for garnish. Blend on high until smooth. Taste for sugar. Strain and serve over ice. Garnish with fresh watermelon.   2. Any of the agua frescas can be garnished with some fresh mint.

Chef Notes


If you have time, I would suggest preparing the agua fresca the day before you are going to enjoy it. The flavors will be even better! Add a little tart carbonation by mixing in some lemon lime seltzer water right before serving.
