Fried cheese tacos! Your kids and friends will love this cheesy twist on crispy tacos. Add it to your next taco night!

Sometimes the most delicious tacos are prepared with the simplest of ingredients. Fried cheese tacos, yes I said fried cheese tacos! This recipe is made with queso de freír and comes together quickly; you could be sitting and enjoying them tonight!

There are a variety of brand names available when it comes to queso de freír (frying cheese). Some varieties melt more than others, and they are all delicious. The golden crust on the fried cheese just adds more flavor to the dish.

Directions

  1. Preheat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. At the same time, heat a large comal or griddle over medium heat as well.
  2. Add 1/4-1/3 cup of oil to the skillet and heat for 2-4 minutes. On the comal, heat the tortillas for 40-60 seconds on one side.
  3. Add the cheese slices to the hot oil in the skillet. Fry for 1-2 minutes or until golden brown. Turn the tortillas and drizzle just enough oil over them so they are lightly covered. At this time, flip the cheese and fry for just another minute.
  4. Top each tortilla with a slice of fried cheese. Fold tortillas over into a taco shape with the cheese as the filling. Continue frying until crispy on both sides. Transfer to serving dish.
  5. Garnish with lettuce, onion, tomato, avocado, cilantro, salsa and Mexican crema. Serve right away, drizzle with lime and enjoy! Garnish with lettuce, onion, tomato, avocado, cilantro, salsa and Mexican crema. Serve right away, drizzle with lime and enjoy!

Chef Notes

The key to building these fried cheese tacos is to have all of your ingredients in place before you begin to fry the cheese. As I stated above, some varieties will melt more than others. Some of the popular brands of queso de freír are Tropical and Cacique.
